The FA believes that small-sided games are the best way to develop children's skills. They recommend that younger age groups begin with 4-a-side, played on a smaller pitch and with a variety of different game formats, moving up to 5, 6 and 7-a-side. This gradual, developmental approach is common in other major sports.
4-a-side is hard work and it can be far more competitive than 7-a-side! Players get twice as many touches of the ball, they have to pass and move and all players have to attack and defend. It allows players to try out new skills, encourages adventurous, attacking play, develops awareness and builds teamwork. Pioneered by Manchester United, 4-a-side is now used by all Premier League Academies. European clubs have used it for decades.

The 4v4 format was
pioneered in the UK

It's now used
